Beyond Evil: Ep 5
Intro:
JW is talking to DS in his weird basement. He recites all the names of the women missing. He asks DS who is the person he’s covering up for. DS recites the names back to him and says Ms. Lee must be the woman they found. DS says he is responsible for her death. DS says he figured out his secret and that his career will be ruined. DS lists everyone in town who he could potentially be covering for…the whole town is crazy. DS is taunting JW, and it’s working. At that time, JW’s father appears on TV, giving a press conference that discredits JW’s statement about a serial murder and apologizes on behalf of him. The deputy commissioner completely throws him under the bus. HE promises to hold JW to his actions and have him properly audited and investigated. What a dad.
Our trio, the deputy commissioner, Chang-Jin, the construction guy, and the councilwoman are having a meal. The deputy commissioner says this will be the last meal as all their business is finished. Chang-Jin said they would meet soon. The deputy commissioner walks out of dinner, and JW is waiting on him, but he ignores him and walks right by.
Still at the dinner with the councilwoman, Chang-Jin says he finds it impressive the deputy commissioner could cut off his own son, unlike someone he knows…the councilwoman, Jeong-Je’s mom.
At Jae-I’s, Jeong-Je is drunk, and DS is worried. Jeong-Je said he couldn’t sleep cause he had bad dreams of women calling him. Jeong-Je does not look like he should be a Chief. DS asks if Jae-I is okay. Jae-I recalls searching for her mom after she went missing and getting used to the rumors. Jae-I mentions that Ji-hun denied the invitation to eat with them. After drawing a deer…Jeong-Je asks DS if he really did not murder Min-Jeong.
Jin-muk is sitting at home watching the news of the deputy commissioner discrediting JW just 2 hours after his claim of a serial murderer in the area. He lays there crying, ignoring his messages.
JW is trying to get into his dad’s house, but the passcode has been changed. The houseworker said he isn’t allowed to be let in…jeez. When he arrives at the police station, a reporter is waiting for him. DS steps in and causes an uproar which causes all of the cops to come outside. They start to bully the reporter and say he has no manners. Chief Nam bans the reporter from being on the premises and starts spraying him with water. JW is confused why they helped him. DS informs him that that’s the way people are in the town. They protect each other from outsiders. Outsiders are the enemy. DS asks JW if he is okay with that. DS goes inside but then rushes back out angry.
25 minutes in:
JW hops in the patrol car with DS. He is speeding to a conference that Jin-Muk is speaking at. Also present are the councilwoman and Chang-Jin. The conference is about the redevelopment plan. DS drives into the crowd and tells JW not to get out of the car. DS runs onto the stage to grab Jin-Muk off the stage. Jin-Muk says he was just trying to help the town since his daughter’s case brought a bad reputation. The townspeople start yelling at DS to stop ruining their plans. One of the townspeople says the situation is annoying. DS approaches the woman and asks if she would say that about her own child. She says her child would not end up like her. DS asks if she should kill her. The councilwoman intervenes and tells DS to control his anger and that the town already went through hell because of him. DS walks towards the councilwoman, scaring her, and she calls for Chang-Jin to help, who just shakes his head and stands there, lol.
Flashback: 20 years ago, the day DS was released from custody, the councilwoman is at DS’s home yelling at him to stay away from Jeong-Je. His parents are pushing her away, saying he has already had enough. The councilwoman says the only reason he was released was because of Jeong-Je’s statement. She makes his mom beg not to have Jeong-Je withdraw his statement. She warns DS that she will kill him if he keeps hanging around Jeong-Je. Flashback ends.
DS tells the councilwoman that Jeong-JE has been holding onto him, not the other way around. He says that if he lets go of Jeong-Je, everything will be over. She seems a bit shaken up. Chang-Jin finally intervenes and gets his guys to restrain DS…like he’s not a police officer…isn’t that a crime? DS tells the men to let go. When they don’t, he starts beating them up. JW gets out of the car, and the councilwoman gets nervous and runs off. JW tells all the men they are under arrest for assaulting an officer as a group. The gang does not want to be arrested, and they start fighting JW. Chang-Jin tells them to stop and starts to walk away before DS tells him he is under arrest for instigating a fight.
35 minutes in:
Back at the station, everyone is going through the process of being arrested. Chang-Jin starts talking about his love for Ji-Hwa, which makes DS mad. Chang-Jin goes on a rant on his violent DS is, lol. Someone provides video proof of DS and JW beating up the gang. The deputy commissioner sees this video and keeps calling JW, who is not answering. Prosecutor Kwon questions the deputy commissioner why he is wavering when he publicly denounced his son. The deputy commissioner asks if he should stop being his father and only be the deputy commissioner…ironic. Prosecutor Kwon says he will be the bridge between JW and the deputy commissioner. The DC (deputy commissioner) and Prosecutor Kwon how his father is doing and all that jazz. They mention how they are like family to each other. When Prosecutor Kwon leaves, the DC picks up his phone to call Chang-Jin. Chang-Jin answered and told him that he knew they would be talking again soon.
In the statement recording room, Ji-Hwa walks in frustrated as DS and JW are waiting for her. Ji-Hwa asks when they became best friends. JW says he was just doing his job. Ji-Hwa says they will start falling for each other soon. DS says he will settle with Chang-Jin if he deletes the videos…but they are already on the internet…
40 minutes in:
After the questioning, Ji-Hwa goes to ask DS about Ji-Hun…big sister is worried. DS asks her if Ji-hun is mad at him. They are wondering if his condition has relapsed.
Outside, JW approaches DS about the fight. JW suggests that he didn’t lose his temper but had alternative motives. He speculates that his goal was to get the redevelopment team to leave Jin-Muk alone in the future. DS asks if he is willing to through away his career to a new story where Jeong-Je and DS are accomplices who have been murdering people all these years.
Prosecutor Kwon and JW meet up at their usual bar. He advises him on how to handle the audit inspection coming up soon. Prosecutor Kwon tells him to continue being a man of principle and following the rules….foreshadowing? He advises him to lay low; otherwise, his father will disown him for good. JW asks him to do a background check on Jeong-Je.
Our reporter is back and asking DS for an interview. DS says he’s not the person. The reporter says he knows he is the person because he saw him get out of the van with the hat on when he was arrested. DS approaches him and asks who his informant is.
JW is on his elliptical when he gets a message from…we don’t know yet.
We see Ji-hun again. He is in DS’s basement meeting with DS. DS asks why Ji-hun tipped the reporters off. Ji-hun starts panicking and saying no. He says he did it because he knew DS didn’t kill Min-Jeong.
Flashback: Ji-hun sees Min-Jeong and Jeong-Je on the train tracks the night she goes missing. Flashback ends.
Ji-hun keeps saying he knew that DS would get off because it didn’t make sense for him to be the murderer. Ji-hun then goes on a rant about how he’s not a stalker and looks for validation from DS. DS tells him not to tell anyone what he saw. DS tells him he will take care of everything. JW sees Ji-Hun walk out of DS’s basement. JW goes down to the basement to meet DS. He asks why he is protecting Jeong-Je. JW then provides information from the background check that after the murder 20 years ago, he was forcibly hospitalized for four years due to alcohol-induced psychosis. While hospitalized, Jeong-Je claimed he killed a deer, caused a scene, and had seizures. DS asked if that was all he found. JW then revealed that he overheard the conversation he and Ji-Hun had just had. DS tells JW that he has no evidence on any of his claims. DS then starts blaming JW for getting Ms. Lee killed. JW breaks down and says it’s his job to catch the culprit no matter what. He asks him again who the culprit is. We get a flashback to Jin-Muk seeing Min-Jeong outside talking to Jeong-Je.
I don’t even know anymore. So many twists and turns!
My prediction: Dong-sik didn’t murder anyone. He is just trying to protect everyone. I don’t have a guess on who the murderer is, but I feel like there might be two people in on it…maybe.
