Beyond Evil: Ep 3

Intro:

The scene starts with the forensic team outside the grocery store taking evidence of the fingers and surrounding areas. The Chief talks to Jin-muk, who is still concerned with Min-Jeong not coming home yet. We get a montage of everyone having a hard time with this news of Min-Jeong’s fingers being found but not her.

Ji-Hwa sends a message to JW to meet her at the police station. JW is going over his suspect board in his apartment, and he labels Min-Jeong as the 7th victim.

DS is sitting in his basement expressionless. He hears this ringing sound which leads to flashbacks of being investigated for the murders 20 years ago. He begins ripping everything off the walls. He heads to Jeong-Je’s station and tells him to get out, lol. Jeong-Je seems confused by this, and they briefly argue. Jeong-Je follows DS into the file room and asks him if he killed Min-Jeong. JW appears outside and hears this conversation. JW’s phone starts to vibrate…dummy. Jeong-Je and DW hear this and shuts the door. He also gets a text. It’s Ji-Hwa asking him to come to the statement recording room. Side note: Chief Jeong-Je and Ji-Hwa work in the same building but on different floors.

In the statement recording room, Ji-Hwa is questioning JW and DS. JW is put off by their informal interaction. He says Ji-Hwa shouldn’t be involved because she was close to Min-Jeong, and she shouldn’t be so casual talking to DS, a previous murder suspect and recently found near another body. Ji-Hwa confirms DS’s alibi until 11 pm. JW doesn’t like her involvement and claims different variations of reasonable doubt. He says that it’s strange that the suspect from 20 years ago moved back to town, and bodies started to appear again. DS starts laughing and says he is not the only one new to town and does not have an alibi at the time of the murder. DS cast reasonable doubt against JW, saying he could be the suspect. JW says he was only 7 years old when the first murder happened. DS thinks he could be a copycat murderer.

JW meets with his dad over dinner and updates him on the cases. His dad is in favor of labeling the crimes a copycat murder. JW asks his dad if he’s worried he’s the real murderer. His dad tells him that he’s not as rational as he thinks and is actually quite emotional, lol. His dad tells him to watch out for DS, who is more rational than he appears. He asks his dad for the security footage in the hallways outside the file room.

20 minutes in:

The police dogs are in the woods searching the area. DS is putting up security cameras in his basement. He is scrubbing the whole area down with bleach. The table he is scrubbing looks like the table Min-Jeong was tied down to. There’s a small spec of blood there. Jeong-Je and Ji-Hwa go to visit DS.  They bring him food prepared by Jae-I. They talk about the possibility of Min-Jeong being dead. Ji-Hwa suspects that DS knows who the culprit is. She talks outside with Jeong-je, who also suspects him. They decide as friends that they don’t believe DS did it but as cops and detectives, they are unsure. Ji-Hwa asks Jeong-je why he didn’t come forward 20 years ago…what does that mean?

Flashback: JW is talking to Ms. Lee, our dead victim. He is prepping her to meet DS. He tells her to dial one once he approaches. Ms. Lee sends “1” multiple times. Flashbacks end.

It’s nighttime, and Ji-Hwa and everyone are out investigating the woods. The dogs start barking as they have found a cellphone. It looks like the phone JW gave Ms. Lee to text him. JW is going through security footage and notices some timestamps are missing. He goes to visit Jeong-Je.

JW goes to the file room and searches Yu-Yeon’s case files. Both Yu-Yeon and Ju-seon’s case files show back up. Jeong-Je says the case files were mixed up in a different box. JW asks Jeong-Je if he’s Dong-Sik’s accomplice. We get a flashback to the Chief investigating young Jeong-Je, claiming DS was with him all night when Yuyeon went missing.

DS is asking the Chief for time off. The Chief tells him no. DS recalls how the Chief beat him when he was a suspect. DS says he understands though. To catch monsters, they must become monsters. Jeong-Je calls DS and tells him that JW came by and suspected him as an accomplice. DS seems unphased. DS decided he didn’t want to take time off after all.

DS and JW are patrolling. JW offers to drive. They drive to the grocery store. They see Jin-muk grabbing the newspaper and crying. JW asks if DS returned the case files.  DS says it doesn’t matter who did it. JW gets a call from Ji-Hwa, who asks him to call right away. Ji-Hwa asks if he’s ever been to the area or knew Min-Jeong. Ji-Hwa shows the phone evidence. The phone had Min-Jeong’s scent on it, and the last messages were to JW.

JW’s dad is talking to Prosecutor Kwon about how he should handle the situation. JW tells the prosecutor that he will be transferred to the area JW is in. Our prosecutor is way more competent than he appears.

Jeong-Je’s mom, the councilwoman, is at a station greeting the officers and thanking them. I guess she is up for reelection. Outside the station, Jeong-Je sees a man limping in. He runs it to tell his mother to basically leave. His mom is lingering around, but he keeps telling her to go. The man must be someone important. He is Chang-Jin, a construction developer. Jeong-Je tells his mom not to get involved with him again. Chang-Jin runs into Ji-Hwa and starts a conversation. She doesn’t seem too fond of him. Chang-Jin is Ji-hwa’s ex-husband, and he’s moving back to the area.

50 Minutes in:

Our Prosecutor meets with JW. He asks JW if there’s anything he needs to know about the cellphone that has Ms. Lee’s DNA on it. The next scene is JW’s father yelling at him for being arrogant and dumb. JW said there is nothing besides his number that ties him to her. His dad is concerned that they will dig into the Foreign Affairs cases JW was working on. One was the case of illegal aliens in a massage parlor, and Ms. Lee was one of the women. That will tie JW to her. JW says they will never identify her. JW says the evidence will only be circumstantial. His dad says evidence doesn’t matter; the press will make him guilty.

Back at the office, they inform DS that JW was called into the prosecutor’s office because of the cell phone found in the woods. JW walks in and says he will be taking a leave of absence. He apologizes to DS then walks out. DS walks after him and says, thanks for your hard work, then laughs. JW tells him he isn’t going anywhere. DS tells JW that he is losing it and to see a therapist on his break.

JW heads out to Mount Simju, where the phone was found. He notices that all the cameras out there are disconnected. He questions a man and asks if he remembers a regular car parked there. JW notices a car trail. He follows the trail to a house and sees the car has a recorder. He asks the homeowner for the recording. The recording shows DS in the mountain and smiles at the camera.

JW goes to DS’s house. He heads down to the basement and snoops around. He doesn’t know he is being watched on the security camera DS put up. JW sees the drop of blood on the table. DS is at the office and looking at his phone. He’s probably watching the recording of JW in his basement. Ji-Hwa then walks in to arrest DS for abducting and assaulting Min-Jeong. DS is in the back of the cop car and starts laughing.
